Submit

We realize that for some, the submission process can be a rather daunting and disengaging experience. Our goal at Big Lucks is to be as helpful and accommodating editors as humanly possible. To make things easy for all of us, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • E-mail all submissions to editors[at]biglucks.com. Please use “SUBMISSION” and the type of work you are submitting(fiction/poetry/art) as the subject line.
  • Please be sure to proofread your submissions.  Pieces with an obscene amount of grammatical errors will be dismissed immediately.
  • Please use standard manuscript formatting: 12-point Courier, wide margins, double-spaced for fiction and single spaced for poetry. Attach your submission as a word document (.doc); do not include your work in the body of an e-mail.
  • Include your name, e-mail address, and a short biography in the body of your email.
  • As writers ourselves, we not only welcome simultaneous submissions but encourage it. That being said, we do ask that you let us know if it is accepted somewhere else, emailing us immediately upon knowledge.
  • We only seek to highlight previously unpublished work.  Do not submit something that has appeared elsewhere, including websites that are not password protected.

Please read and adhere to the following guidelines dependent on what type of work you are submitting.

PROSE: We encourage risk-taking.  We advocate invention. Although we prefer fiction and non-fiction that is conceptual and experimental in form, content and subject matter, we are equally adept to appreciate the strengths of genre work.  Our only requirement is that your work is so good we’ll lose sleep over it.  We do accept multiple pieces; however, we ask than you submit no more than 4,000 words of prose at a time.  We are not looking for chapter excerpts unless they can stand on their own.

POETRY: You may submit up to five poems at a time. Strong voices and work that makes us think, feel, or wonder something different will be looked at fondly. An eighty line limit is asked of all poetry submissions.  Send all pieces in attachments in ONE single e-mail, stating the titles of the attached works in the body of your email, along with the information asked above for everyone.

VISUAL ART: Big Lucks seeks various visual art for publication within our magazine.  We currently accept color submissions for our cover; however, to keep costs down, we’re forced to print all internal images in black and white.  Some formats we’re particularly fond of are:

  • photography (both film and digital)
  • mixed media & collage
  • prints
  • vector drawings
  • scans of paintings and sketches

Please send all submissions as JPEGs, 300dpi.

Big Lucks retains First Serial rights to publish the accepted material. After publication, all rights revert back to the author.  We are not a paying market.  However, we provide our contributor’s copies on a issue-to-issue basis.
