Mission

There’s just something so beautiful about breaking the rules.  This especially holds true for literature: whether it was Ezra Pound and vorticists, Italo Calvino and post-modernists, Paul Éluard and surrealist poets, or Raymond Carver and the “dirty” realists, the 20th century was full of rule-breakers and rebels. These writers whose work took on new forms told new stories in a way we never heard them before. The standards have been rewritten, and the bar has been set high.

Modern writers finds themselves in a perplexing situation– gone are the days of literary movements; the written word is no longer our main source of entertainment.  Magazines are folding and America’s oldest publishing houses are making cutbacks.  Yet we find ourselves writing more than ever– if it’s through blog posts or status updates, our society cannot resist the urge to compose.

Grace Paley once said “you become a writer because you need to become a writer– nothing else.”  We at Big Lucks celebrate those who still believe in the art of literature, and the power of the word to move.
